Video Description: Addition is introduced through a game. The teacher introduces the game by using a puppet. This keeps student interest. After the demo the teacher partners the children with students who will be able to cooperate and who are working at approximately the same level. This is why two of the students are learning Power of 9 – they are ready. Games are a powerful way to differentiate instruction. Notice the focus on saying the numbers as the teacher circulates around the room personalizing the instruction. This is very important as the brain needs to hear and see the numbers to develop number sense. This game should be introduced as soon as two students in the class can subitize (say correctly) all the numbers from one to ten. The teacher eventually uses the place value cards to show that 10 + 4 = 14 but her first strategy was to teach students to count on from the ten. Both strategies are important. Once students can add ten to a number they can learn all their adding facts
