Video Description: Teaching Problem Solving Through the Coin Problem
(Grades 3 – 6)
This problem is rich in teaching opportunities. A grade four class is presented in September with a complex problem that requires them to find how many ways to make a dollar. Most students get started right away but others struggle and almost give up. Those who struggle are presented with the opportunity to use a model and get unstuck using a variety of other strategies. Meanwhile other students in the class are independently exploring many different strategies. The poster cards used in this presentation are available free on this website.
