Video Description: Teaching Problem Solving, Decimals, Fractions and Percent through the Floor Hockey Problem
(Grades 4 – 8)

This problem is rich in teaching opportunities. A grade four class is presented in September with a complex problem that requires them compare fractions to find the best hockey players on a school floor hockey team. Originally the students choose one student and then discover slowly how to create comparisons by turning the fractions created into decimals and percents. The video shows how visually powerful the ordinary “hundreds square” can be in helping students compare data. This problem should be taught before teaching students how to collect, explore and compare data in the Weekly Graph process.
