Power of Ten Teacher Place Value Cards![]() The Power of Ten© laminated Teacher Place Value cards – for problem solving and making numbers to 9999. Using his experiences with students and teachers, and his knowledge of current brain research, Trevor Calkins has developed this unique and simple set of number cards designed to help children grasp the concept of place value, as well as to improve their mental math skills. The cards are accompanied by an explanation of how they work and how they can be used. Printed with clear black figures on a white background, these laminated cards are designed for frequent use. They are easily manipulated and stored. A games approach is encouraged for students first learning to use the cards. Later, they can be used by students as a helpful tool whenever they are solving number problems. Young students first learning place value will be profit from the cards, as will older students who are not yet secure in understanding what they are doing when adding multi-digit numbers.

The Power of Ten© laminated Place Value and Problem Solving cards contains 16 lettered sets – one set per two students – designed to demonstrate the expanded form of a number, to make the connection between place value and meaning, and to improve students’ mental math skills. Place Value Strips can be very valuable for teaching children how to mentally add numbers from left to right and for teaching regrouping. Students should have access to these place value strips whenever they are solving problems. They should be taught to add and show their work from left-to right as well as the line-them-up way. They should also be encouraged to add mentally whenever they can rather than being forced to show their regrouping by showing the line-them-up method and then showing the “carry” marks.
