The Large Ten-Frame Cards are used extensively in primary classrooms and occasionally in intermediate classrooms. They are particularly effective in teaching students to add and subtract 9, 8 and 5. They make teaching doubles easy and the “friendly numbers” such as 4 + 6 even easier.
Subtraction is easily demonstrated as students can imagine removing a 5 stick from the 8 card. 
The cards are extremely useful for teaching doubles and for learning the doubling process when learning the multiplication facts. | | When a student wants to subtract 8 from 13, it is obvious that the whole question is very easy when the 8 is taken from the 10 (not the 3 which is what the student would be tempted to do if the numbers were lined up in the traditional format).
