This series of classroom videos contains an overview of the program’s philosophy and classroom examples of teachers implementing four of the main teaching tools in the Power of Ten/Teachable Moment system. All four of the videos are applicable to primary grades (kindergarten through grade three).

This remarkable Greater Victoria School District video of first year teacher, Marla Margetts, using the “How Many Ways” idea from the Teachable Moment Manual, is inspirational. Marla’s students exhibit confidence in their own thinking skills as they create equations for the daily numbers. The video also demonstrates how important the connection between home and school is as the students bring some incredible ideas into the classroom.

In this video four primary teachers personalize the teaching of basic facts by focusing on student strengths and building from ‘what students know’ to ‘what they need to know’. One section makes the connection to problem solving. Another section shows the teacher using the Power of Ten Cards and demonstrates transferring the process from the cards to student visualization.

Problem solving should be at the heart of any mathematics program. Stories give life to numbers. Projects such as the height project make connections to school, home and community life. Students write problems and then those problems are used to make connections to the ever present basic facts.
