Independant Consultants
The following individuals are independent educators who have completed training with Power of Ten and may be available for giving workshops and presentations in your district or school. They represent a wide variety of experience in elementary and middle schools. For more information please contact these individuals directly.

 

Stacy Decosse

altStacy has taught K-12, but most of her experience has been in the 4 -7 grades. She has used the Power of Ten/Teachable Moment system in her classroom for the past 8 years and has been an intermediate workshop presenter for the past 6 years throughout BC and Alberta. Stacy and Krista Horn often team together to present both Intermediate and Primary perspectives. Stacy is currently Vice-Principal and Grade 5 teacher at JA Laird Elementary school in Invermere, BC. She is working on her Masters degree with a curriculum focus.

Norma Fraser (Level K-8)

alt Norma is a recently retired teacher. Her experience has covered all grade levels. She taught kindergarten for 10 years and then taught elementary and intermediate grades. Her teaching career for the last 8 years before retirement was as a Special Education Teacher in a Middle School. She was part of a Numeracy team in School District 83 and an Early Intervention Numeracy teacher. The Power of Ten and Teachable Moment series were a major part of her teaching curriculum at all grade levels. James Hansen (Level K-7)

alt James has taught K-7, with a special interest in teaching mathematics. He was fortunate to have the chance early in his career to work with Trevor, and these ideas have been an important part of his teaching ever since. He has used the Power of Ten in his own classroom and with colleagues and has given Power of Ten workshops for educators on Vancouver Island and on the Sunshine Coast. James is currently Vice-Principal of Literacy and Numeracy Learning Initiatives in the Greater Victoria School District.

Colleen Howard (Level K-2) alt

Colleen is currently teaching in Vancouver as a dual-track kindergarten teacher, offering two unique programs, with a strong early numeracy focus. She began working with the Power Of Ten as a practicum teacher and has continued working with it in her give teaching assignments. She was mentored by Trevor Calkins through the 2006-2007 school year as they worked together in her Grade 2 French Immersion classroom to create a professional development DVD for French Immersion teachers.

 

 

Marla Lee Margetts (Level K-8)

alt Marla is the designer and teacher in the powerful Grade 1 video "Making Math Meaningful". She has taught students from Grade l to Middle School and has a strong interest in making the connections between literacy and numeracy. She is the executive producer of the video series being created to help coach teachers in implementing the Power of Ten and Teachable Moment series that focuses on creating sustainable strategies. Marla has a Masters Degree in administration and leadership with a focus on numeracy.

Lenora Milliken

alt Lenora is currently the Numeracy Resource teacher for the Alberni School District on Vancouver Island. She has worked with the Power of Ten for the past ten years. She is an accomplished presenter who has given workshops and demonstration lessons for Power of Ten in and out of district over the past five years. She has co-authored and consulted for the Power of Ten 2008 "Mastering the Basics" series (revised to the new curriculum). Lenora has taught math from K to Grade 10.

 

 

Colleen Neves

alt Colleen is currently a kindergarten teacher in the Greater Victoria School District where she has taught numeracy using the Power of Ten for over eight years, both in the classroom and as a learning support teacher, Grade K-7. She has worked as a member of the District Numeracy Committee for three years and as a member of a special initiative targeting inner city schools. She has given workshops for Power of Ten to primary teachers, early childhood educators, and student teachers at the University of Victoria.

Beatrice Ocquaye (Level K-3) alt

Beatrice is presently teaching junior and senior kindergarten using the Power of Ten materials. For over eight years she has use the Power of Ten and Teachable Moment series for Grade K-7, both as a classroom and a resource room teacher. Beatrice has delivered numerous workshops and demo lessons. Most recently, she presented at the Kindergarten Matters Symposium in Thunder bay, Ontario, and was a co-presenter with Trevor at the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education. She is currently working on a Masters Degree focusing on numeracy.

Marg Penny alt

Marg has worked with Power of Ten for six years and participated in the Power of Ten video series as a model teacher. Marg has 32 years experience teaching Grade 2, 3, and 4 and received the 2008 Premier's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She has presented workshops for Power of Ten and she is implementing "Reading Power" literacy and guided reading in her district. Marg serves as a connecting voice between math and literacy programs.

Lorill Vining

alt Lorill is a teacher in the Campbell River and has taught Grades 1 through 6. Since the completion of her Masters Degree two years ago, she has been the District Numeracy Resource Teacher. Lorill has been supporting teachers and students both in the classroom and workshop settings. Trevor and Lorill co-taught a six-session course during the 07/08 school year, working with teachers using the Power of Ten materials. Using picture books as a springboard into the math class, accompanied by the Power of Ten materials has become an area of expertise. Lorill is an executive member of the BC Association of Math Teachers and has done an extensive amount of in-service with the new WNCP curriculum.

Judy Williams alt

Judy is a District Curriculum Leader and AISI Facilitator with the Red Deer Public School District. She was trained in 2005 in using the Power of Ten and has presented several of these workshops for other districts in the province. Currently, Judy is actively involved in providing and facilitating professional development for teachers in the Red Deer Public School District. Judy has a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership.

Krista Horn alt

Krista is currently teaching Grade ¾ in a small rural school in Edgewater. She has taught all elementary grades over the past 15 years. She has been using the Power of Ten and Teachable Moments for the past 7 years. Krista and Stacy have had the privilege to team teach to both primary and intermediate students using the Power of Ten. Krista has presented many primary workshops throughout B.C. and Alberta. She has co-presented with both Trevor and Stacy.

 

Carol Fitzel alt

Carol Fitzel has worked over twenty years with Wild Rose Public Schools,responsible for teaching mathematics to all four divisions. For the past two and a half years, Carol has been the AISI Coordinator for a project called CELE, Creating Enhanced Learning Environments, which focuses on differentiated instruction and technology integration, specifically in the areas of math and science. She is currently finishing her Masters of Education in Leadership and has focused her action research project on instructional strategies.
