Video Description: Subtraction is introduced through a story. The pattern the teacher is demonstrating is the one that occurs when you subtract and number from 10. While she is doing this she is patterning language and reading as well. She reinforces the pattern with two visual aids – Power of Ten cards and ten-frame egg cartons. Notice how the Power of Ten Place Value cards are arranged in the pocket chart. This arrangement utilizes the key cards to make the numbers to 100 as the 9 is behind the 1, 8 is on the back of the 2, 80 is on the back of the 20 and so on. This way students learn their complementary numbers for 10 and 100 effortlessly. The teacher ends the lesson with by connection subtraction to addition in fact families which is a lesson she had covered earlier.)
