What is Power of Ten?

how children learnThe Power of Ten is a set of visual tools (including playing cards and place value cards) that help students make sense of number. Games using the cards help children learn and retain patterns such as: To add a number to nine, get one from the other number to make a ten. Or To easily subtract nine from thirteen (or other teen number) subtract nine from the ten. Read more.

Mastering the Basics

assessing fundamental conceptsAll children need to know their basics. Many children arrive at grades four and above already knowing them and can demonstrate their knowledge by quickly completing the Mastering the Basics tests. For students who need more time, Mastering the Basics provides five test versions for each of the ‘basics’. This is a one-day-a-week program leaving the other four days of the week for learning the rest of the curriculum through problems, projects and games.

Parent Resources

a more visual approachThe parent materials are designed for children ages three to ten and for students who are struggling and want to start their basic facts all over again with a new more visual approach. The materials have been developed so parents can follow the book and use the Power of Ten cards and strategies to cover the number sense part of the curriculum. The materials can be used by home schooling parents or by parents wishing to give their children support or a head start.

DVD Video Series

ordering the materials you needThese videos have been designed to support four of the ideas in the Teachable Moment/Power of Ten system. Each video may contain interviews with teachers, some general philosophy and examples of students being taught in the classroom. Teachable Moments

making connectionsThis series covers the entire curriculum for each grade level. Teachers are provided with a Yearly Plan for the most recent curriculum in Western Canada but the manuals generally apply for any North American jurisdiction as they are based on many of the ideas supported and generated by current curriculum and brain research. In a nutshell, the series promotes the idea that learning is easier when it is relevant to the learner – for this reason, many of the activities are student generated and creative.

Workshops

Summer 2010Students and their teachers often ‘struggle with math’. Over the past ten years Trevor Calkins and his team of trainers have assisted thousands of primary and intermediate teachers to implement the dynamic and powerful Power of Ten System in their classrooms. Every summer the Power of Ten offers workshops for teachers in some of the major cities in the Western Canadian provinces.

Brain-Based Learning

In brain-based learning, educators see learners as active participants in the learning process. The teacher is not the deliverer of knowledge, but the facilitator and intelligent guide who engages student interest in learning. Students and teachers become partners in the pursuit of understanding.
